We previously had a simplehuman trashcan in the kitchen, with a separate container for recycling in the next room. We love having both receptacles in one place. It's true that we take both the recycling and trash out more now that we have half as much space for each, but not having to go to another room to dispose of recycling is wonderful.
The can itself looks almost identical to our old trashcan, except that this has the butterfly opening on top. At first it seemed to open a little slowly, but either it got broken in or we learned how to press the foot pedal optimally, because that's no longer a problem. There's a way to make the doors stay open if you are working on something that requires frequently using the can.
We bought both the trash bags and the recycling bags, which fit nicely and keep the unit clean. The recycling bags are blue clear plastic that recycling sites accept. (We checked with ours to make sure.)

The recycler has served us well so far. It is actually being used as a garbage can in one of the bins and a bio waste collector in the other. I was worried that the seal between the butterflys would not be good enough to keep the odors contained. The foot lever works very well and the doors close very smoothly. The only reason I have not given the product 5 stars is beacause I have only had it 2 months. You never know what will happen in the future. Good luck with your purchase.

Pros:
-Trash can is super sturdy, has a heavy base, and is hard to tip. Our 40 lb dog got into it only once, and that was when the lid didn't close all the way when we overfilled it. Our dog has been craftily getting into every other garbage can we tried. This is the first one he can barely move.
-The lid opening/closing is pretty sick. It's fast enough that if you've got some drippy stuff you can smack that lever open and dispose of things quickly. The no-noise closing was a luxury at first, but now I realize how my ears have been violated in the past.
Cons:
-Like another reviewer stated, the buckets are an odd size to get trash bags for. The closest I came up with is an 8 gallon bag and making a knot at the opening so the bag will fit snugly over the lip of the bucket. Simple human gives you 3 liners to start you off. They fit perfectly, but to buy them all the time as trash bags is a little ridiculous.
-When changing the bags out, reseating the buckets is a little annoying. If not seated perfectly, the lid will not close all the way. I have to wiggle it every time to get it right. I got used to this small inconvenience, but my husband could never get it right.
If you find yourself stuck with the recycler version like me, you CAN change out the bucket to be a single bucket. The simple human web site sells replacement buckets. I inquired with them, and they told me that the single bucket wouldn't fit, but I got it anyway. And it DOES fit. Now I can happily put my 13 gallon bags in without fuss.
UPDATE: Our dog has now figured out how to tip this heavy trash can over. I can't imagine any other trash can being more durable, unless it has a special latch system. We'll be looking to anchor the trash can down to prevent further tipping.
